The Cathedral and historic Mosque of Cordoba is the first and foremost monument in Western Islam, and also one of the most sublime of its type in the world. The temple is more than a historical and archeological monument; it is a unique embodiment of over eight centuries of architectural and artistic change. The building today is an expansion of the mosque built by Abd al-Rahman I over the old christian basilica of San Vicente.
